Emma and Jess managed Paper and Print as freelance project producers for Double Elephant Print Workshop. It was a £90K National Lottery Heritage Fund project investigating the history of paper mills in Exeter - their social and global histories as well as the details of process and production. Jess managed the team of community volunteers leading the research with support from Dr Nicola Thomas, Head of Geography at the University of Exeter and several local historians and researchers. We explored the archives of Exeter Cathedral, Devon & Exeter Institution, Devon Heritage Centre as well as online records. A resulting research blog became a rich resource of all our discoveries.

Emma managed the artist commissions, project exhibitions and the overall finance, documentation and evaluation process.

The project outputs were

• printed illustrated maps featuring the researched stories of Exeter’s papermills

• two exhibitions (at Positive Light Projects and at University of Exeter)

• a year of paper and print community and school workshops in partnership with Devon Wildlife Trust plus adult courses and talks at DE

• a sound story commission, Paper Heron, by Ellen Wiles

• a visual art commission, Vestigia, by Juliette Losq

• a research blog featuring the amazing discoveries from the volunteer community research team.
